Enlightened, Season 2

111004_INTERROGATION_Dern.jpg Laura Dern in ?ENLIGHTENED?

Four unmarked vehicles pull up, and a decked-out posse of police with fabulous wigs marches out in unison. They head toward some familiar corporate towers trailed by a grim-faced blonde in a pretty yellow dress. As they enter the buildings and breach the executive suite, a corporate secretary lets out a zealous shriek, recoiling from her glass perch as if she?s about to meet a divine end.

The uproarious sequence is another dream plucked from Amy?s spry subconscious and made into a warped little short film all its own. It?s both Amy?s latest self-tribute?a hilariously exalted view of her eventual triumph?and a handy distillation of the anxieties that continue to grip her in constant doubt. Her dream?s new-age Black Power stylings are so zany, so Amy, that it almost seems mean to point out how deluded and creepy they are. Besides, the tribal chants pulsing through the whole sequence are inspired enough that you kind of wish they scored your dreams, too. The only thing more alarming and oddly thrilling than watching Amy?s worldview play out is diving directly into her brain.

Meditative voice-over sessions bookend each episode of Enlightened, and they?ve become one of its signatures?trippy, pious asides that have evolved as the series goes along. They are especially welcome this season, as thriller elements begin to dictate longer bits of plot to keep Amy and Tyler?s sleepy corporate espionage alive. But her actual late-night imaginings tend to cut closer to the bone: a hazy party in the office that doubles as a parade of humiliations, or an imagined play-by-play of an envied co-worker?s sex life. Amy?s vision of taking down the office is the show?s most blissed-out reverie yet, ending with a crying, pregnant Krista in handcuffs, begging Amy for mercy as the police drag her downstairs. Nope. The elevator slams shut. Goodbye.

Amy wakes up, naturally, looking exhausted and worn out. As cathartic as the vision is, it sets up the contradictory guilt she feels about ruining the lives she quietly envies. Even as Tyler finally crushes a cruel superior with amusing satisfaction, she is bizarrely heartbroken. The sequence ultimately points to the great, sad irony of Amy?s quest: Even if she brings Abaddon down, her victory would inevitably be an empty one. For what does Amy have if she doesn?t have Abaddon to burn down?

Quantum States Between Order and Disorder

Jan. 23, 2013 ? With his research on quantum states in the realm between order and disorder, Professor J?rg Schmiedmayer's work has raised quite a stir; ultra cold atom clouds with a high degree of order approach a disordered thermal equilibrium. During this transition they spend some time in an astonishingly stable intermediate state. With a new ERC Grant, Schmiedmayer will now dig deeper into the physics of non-equilibrium phenomena in many-particle quantum systems.

How do quantum states melt?

Every day we can see transitions into a thermal equilibrium -- for instance when an icicle heats up and melts. When this happens, the entropy (a measure for the disorder in a physical system) increases and information about the system is lost. The ultra cold Bose-Einstein condensates created at the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) also approach a thermal equilibrium. In doing so, they go from a state which can also be described in terms of quantum physics to a state in which the quantum properties of the particles do not play an important role any more. In between, however, a surprisingly stable intermediate state can be found -- the so-called "pre-thermalized state."

"At first, the order in the system decays rapidly, but then, after reaching the pre-thermalized state, it stays practically constant," says J?rg Schmiedmayer. "Part of the quantum information can still be detected. The atom cloud has not yet forgotten that it has emerged from an extremely ordered Bose-Einstein condensate." While the initial loss of information takes place within a few milliseconds, the pre-thermalized state remains for more than a tenth of a second.

Quantum Computers and the Big Bang

Schmidmayer believes that this appearance on an intermediate state between quantum physical order and classical disorder is a very general phenomenon, which should also be visible in different systems. "Pre-thermalized states supposedly play a role in heavy ion collisions at extremely high energies, for instance at the LHC, CERN. Also, the cosmic background radiation could possibly come from a pre-thermalized state the whole universe was in shortly after the Big Bang," says Schmiedmayer. In quantum physics, the pre-thermalized state could be important for many different applications. If data is to be stored in a quantum computer or if quantum-calculations are to be carried out, a state of highly ordered disequilibrium has to be formed. The transition into a thermal equilibrium then destroys this state.

Oil Up a Spoon Before Measuring Something Sticky

Oil Up a Spoon Before Measuring Something StickyWhether you're adding honey to tea, or you need to measure any sticky substance, it'll generally stick. This doesn't happen with just things like honey and syrup, but even with vegetable shortening or sour cream. If you want to get an accurate measurement and save yourself some cleaning, redditor Shabotski recommends oil.

When baking, you use butter or oil to keep your cookies (or whatever you're making) from sticking to the pan. Similarly, if you want to prevent anything from sticking to a spoon or measuring cup, just add some oil. This is particularly convenient if your recipe calls for oil already because you can just measure out the oil first. If it doesn't, just pour a little bit in the measuring device and spread it around with a napkin or paper towel. This little amount of effort will make cleaning easier later.

If a recipe calls for both oil and honey, always pour the oil into your measuring spoon first | Reddit

Libya reinforces border, oilfields after Algeria attack

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libya has strengthened its oil protection force in southwestern oilfields near the Algerian border after the In Amenas attack in its neighbor.

In an interview with Reuters, Colonel Ali Elahrash, head of Libya's Petroleum Faculty Guard, said men from the Western Mountain town of Zintan had been sent in as reinforcements to boost border security as well to oilfields in the area.

Last week's raid on the Algerian desert plant, about 100 km (60 miles) from the Libyan border pushed Saharan militancy to the top of the global agenda.

Libyan oilfields, like Italy's Eni's El Feel and Spain's Repsol's Sharara, are several hundred miles away.

Oil force members on leave swiftly returned to work, while other former rebel fighters from Zintan - whose men already guards oil fields in the area - were also dispatched.

"As soon as we heard about what happened in Algeria we upped the level of security, especially in the area close to the border," Elahrash said at his office in the Libyan capital.

"Most of the forces have been sent to the border, they are doing a lot of patrols which is helpful for protecting the oil fields; support has also been sent to the fields. We think there are enough forces and enough equipment to protect the area."

Walid Hassan Mohammed, director of public relations, said hundreds of men were sent; while the force usually deploys 50 to 100 men at fields there, it now had at least 100 at the sites.

The 15,000 strong Petroleum Faculty Guard, the majority made up of former rebel fighters from the 2011 war that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, is divided into five branches across the country.

The southwestern area - which looks after the El Feel, Sharara and other oilfields - comes under the Zintan branch.

An operations room has been set up in Zintan and Tripoli.

"They may not have the experience because many of them are not from the army, they are rebel fighters but they want to protect their country," Elahrash said.

NEW EQUIPMENT NEEDED

OPEC members Libya and Algeria are Africa's third and fourth largest oil producers with Libya also holding the largest oil reserves on the continent.

A foreign worker close to the Libyan-Algerian border said he had seen more pick-ups mounted with anti-aircraft guns and a boosting of man power in the last few days.

"Pretty much everyone was on essential expat manning prior to the (In Amenas) incident, due to the instability across the country and there doesn't seem to have been any radical change since last week," he said.

Mohammed said embassies with workers in the area had been in touch with the force over security in the last few days.

Eni is boosting its security in North Africa, a source familiar with the matter said, while another added it had not considered repatriation of its foreign staff at El Feel.

BP, which had staff at In Amenas and also has exploration rights in western Libya, has a few expatriate staff in Tripoli and fewer than 100 local staff, a spokesman said.

"We are reviewing security across the region," he said.

While the return of foreign oil companies to Libya helped it climb back up close to pre-war output of 1.6 million barrels per day, the full return of expatriate workers has been slow to the country, awash with weapons, because of precarious security.

Elahrash said movement outside a desert camp or oilfield has to be accompanied by members of the oil protection force.

"Everyone knows that protecting the oilfields is something very important - the foreign oil companies would not work here unless the security was good," he said. "No local or foreign company has received a single threat ... The security conditions of all the companies working in oilfields are very good."

However the force admits it does not have the equipment it needs: proper communications, night vision equipment or cars for the desert. Instead, the guard, of which 2,000 are army-trained, use medium to light weapons left over from the war.

"We are missing technology and new materials but at the same time we are able to protect all these areas in fields with the old equipment we already have," Elahrash said, adding the training the guards still lacked could begin in March.

"They must learn how to work in oilfields, how to secure them," he said, adding about 3,500 men had already been trained.

The men signed contracts with the force, which has a budget from the National Oil Corporation to pay salaries, which start at 1,000 ($770) Libyan dinars a month and reach 1,600 dinars.

Asked what message he could give to worried foreign oil companies, Elahrash said: "The Libyan nation can protect all the foreigners who work on its land."

Local Business Online Marketing: Increase Your Exposure Today

Are you searching for local business online marketing tips? You're in luck.

In the business world, your exposure means everything. It's actually a pretty simple concept to understand. The more people that are aware of what your business has to offer, the better.

Assuming your business offers a quality product line or service, marketing is essentially a numbers game. What is your current marketing strategy?

If you haven't yet implemented internet marketing into your strategy, now is the time.

    Can the Internet Help?

You're here today because you're interested in learning a few local business online marketing strategies. First of all, congratulations on your entrepreneurial drive. This rare trait will assuredly help you build your business efficiently.

Billionaire Microsoft mogul Bill Gates recently made an interesting comment regarding internet marketing. And considering this man's success, his remarks may be worth listening to.

Bill Gates said, if your business is not on the internet, your business will be out of business. This is an incredibly interesting quote that will continue to ring true. So how do you go about implementing local business online marketing strategy?

    Setting up Shop

When looking to jump into the internet marketing realm, first thing is first; set up shop. Like your office or store in the real world, a website/blog on the internet is your home base and work shop.

This is where you will house all of the necessary information regarding your company. Efficiently maintaining a website or blog will allow your business to establish an online presence and garner a following.

    But how?

When the modern consumer, locally or globally, is interested in making a purchase of some kind, they consult the internet. Through the power of search engines, such as Google or Bing, these consumers locate the products/services they need.

This a major reason as to why the internet is so incredibly useful. When an internet surfer types in a given search query, Google's predetermined algorithm does its best to produce the most appropriate results. Because of this, you can do some local business online marketing by creating web content that targets popular search terms in your industry.

As an example, let's say I own a local Pizza shop and I live in San Diego. A popular search term in your area might be 'San Diego Pizza Delivery'.

If I write a blog post using that search term, the odds of my website ranking on the first page of Google increase dramatically. This strategy is referred to as SEO; or search engine optimization.

    Expedite the Process

While running a website/blog and SEO can be efficient local business online marketing strategies, getting started can take some time. In order to rank on the first page of Google, you have to post your content on an authority website.

A new domain name is not aged enough to be considered an authority. As you can see, starting from scratch can be tough.

Luckily for local business owners, there are some programs allows you to promote your business on their aged domain/authority blog for a relatively low price. Alternatively, if you're looking to implement a local business online marketing strategy fast you can purchase an aged domain. This will cost you more than buying a new one but you'll have the advantage of being able to rank in the search engine more quickly.

Did Mars hide life in its watery pockets?

Signs of the most recent life on Mars may have sprung up from underground. Because they would have been protected from harsh conditions on the surface, such as radiation, pockets of underground water may be where Martian life existed most recently.

Sulphates, made through interaction with briny water, lie all over Mars. As water underground is also briny, this suggested frequent upwellings.

But Joseph Michalski of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, and colleagues found that most basins, where groundwater would have pooled, are free of sulphates. The deep McLaughlin crater is instead rich in clays and carbonates which also formed through contact with water.

    Search those basins

As water bearing these minerals would be more life-friendly than sulphate-rich water, which is more acidic, McLaughlin may be a good place to look for signs of life that pooled there from underground.

"The stuff we see in McLaughlin could have been very good at preserving life and could have been habitable," says Michalski.

He suggests that future Mars missions should search such basins for signs of habitability, such as the organic molecules that NASA's Curiosity Mars rover is currently seeking. "Perhaps we need to re-emphasise and redirect our attention to the subsurface environments," Michalski says.

Horton Newsom at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, who was not involved in the new work and who works on Curiosity, thinks the idea sounds reasonable. "Given the low elevation location of McLaughlin crater? it is quite reasonable that it was flooded by deep groundwater."

Need Home Based Business Advice? Look Below! | Mike ...

When you run your own work from home business, you can enjoy many benefits like flexible work schedules and being the boss. You are able to involve yourself with things that you care about. With the advice in the article below, you can get started enjoying these advantages today.

Buy a scanner so you can scan receipts and other documentation. You can easily find a good one by just reading some reviews and getting what suits you.

Take time for yourself to avoid burnout. While you want great profits, you shouldn?t risk your health to achieve them. It?s vital that you give yourself proper break times, and take a short vacation each year so that you can revitalize your thoughts and come back even stronger.

TIP! Once you have selected the product for your home business, you may want to branch out. What other products and services might be logical complements to your existing product? For example, if the service that you are selling is landscaping, you might want to sell your own product line of landscaping products.

You need to make sure that you don?t have distractions in your office at home that happen randomly. However, if you need to take personal time out for friends or family members, schedule an appointment with them. You can take time off to deal with personal items during the day and make up the business time later.

    Vision Board

TIP! Don?t go crazy with the layout and design of your home business website unless you?re a clown that is hired for birthday parties. Flashy, interactive graphics are best used for kid focused sites or fun, party sites.

Use a vision board that displays pictures and quotations to help you reach your goals. You could use pictures of things you want to buy, places you want to go or simple pictures of your family. Your vision board should include all things you are passionate about! )

Make certain your business has the capability to turn a profit before you start. Research the market to make sure it is not saturated. You may not want to enter a market that has too much competition. Do a financial evaluation of the business before you decide on which one to start.

TIP! Make sure books you use often are close at hand. Dictionaries are useful as they can keep you on point with your spelling and grammar.

Not every service or product fulfills all needs. Work with large numbers, but don?t attempt to please everyone; make logical, well-planned business choices. Concentrate your energy on the consumers that are interested in the things that you have to offer to them.

To succeed with your home business, you must know your bottom line. One model is to sell your products for two times your production cost. Some may even multiple that amount by three when selling it.

TIP! When your business is in your home, reduce distractions from your loved ones. Since interruptions can seriously impede productivity, let everyone know when you are going to work and when you expect to be finished.

Do you want to specialize in selling used books? There are many sites you can use to sell your products. Check out all of them. Put together a list of sites you can try and rate them in function of how reliable they are and the profits you made on them. Just because the books have high prices doesn?t mean sellers are selling many books there. Prices may be more on a highly reliable site.

    Liability Insurance

TIP! As your own boss, you should still have a predictable work schedule to prevent slacking. You have an obligation to your business, and you can?t let yourself get distracted because you are working from home.

Make sure you have proper liability insurance in place for your business. Liability insurance is essential if clients will visit your home-based business. You will be protected if someone is accidentally injured on the premises or in any way that your business can be held accountable.

Among the most critical tips for home business enterprise operators is to observe a regular workday. If you do not have a regular schedule, you can find yourself working too much and not having enough time for your family. It can put you on the fast track to job burnout and family discontent. You will find schedules tough to keep up with at first. However, this allows your loved ones and friends to understand when you are or are not available.

TIP! Your business will be most successful if you base it on something that you already know quite well. A lot of people who want to start home businesses think they can learn on the job.

It?s not as difficult to start a work from home business as it may sound. There are many simple business models you can successfully run from your home, which saves the expense of a storefront or rented office space. Think about products you would like to see available within your area. Consider what it would entail to start that kind of business in your area.

There is no need for owning a online business to be hard. When you make a strong plan, stick to it and work towards your goals, the benefits of running a home based business are astounding. It?s great to be the one calling the shots and making your own flexible schedule. Keep this advice in mind and get started right away!

When it comes to some additional critical information, have a look at this particular full article Product Launch Leverage SEO Blueprint because what you will certainly discover will certainly give a boost to your business and give you new insights into Home Business.

Obama: Privilege to use King's Bible in inaugural

President Barack Obama says it was a privilege to take the oath of office using a Bible that had been owned by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Obama paused by a statue of King in the Capitol Rotunda after a luncheon hosted by members of Congress. He was accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill.

"You know this is the first time I have seen this," he said.

The King bust ? a bronze sculpture 36 inches high on a 66-inch high Belgian black marble base ? has been in the Capitol Rotunda since 1986, according to the Architect of the Capitol.

King's Bible was one of two Obama used for the ceremonial inauguration.

"I had the great privilege that the Bible we used was his Bible and they asked for it to be inscribed," Obama said. The other Bible belonged to President Abraham Lincoln.

Monday was the federal celebration of King's birthday.

Hoping to revive an ancient tongue, Pope tweets in Latin

    25 min.

Pope Benedict tweeted in Latin for the first time on Sunday, taking his mission to revive the Catholic Church's official language to a very 21st-century medium.

"Unitati christifidelium integre studentes quid iubet Dominus? Orare semper, iustitiam factitare, amare probitatem, humiles Secum ambulare," the pontiff wrote.

Baffled? So were many Twitter users. "Benny, nobody understands a word of Latin! #adviceforthepope" read one response on the online messaging service.

The pope's tweet meant: "What does the Lord command to those wholly eager for the unity of those following Christ? To always pray, to continually do justice, to love uprightness, to walk humbly with Him," according to University of Cambridge scholar Tamer Nawar.

The message was shorter and, arguably, more elegant in its original language ??one of the reasons why Latin-lovers want to conserve the tongue of ancient Rome, Pope Benedict foremost among them.

The Holy See, where even ATM bank machine transactions are available in Latin, is one of the last bastions of the language that gave rise to Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Romanian.

In November the pope set up a new Vatican department charged with promoting the study and use of the language within the Roman Catholic Church and beyond.

Known for his traditionalist leanings, the 85-year old pontiff has also allowed a partial return of the old-style Latin Mass that was phased out more than four decades ago.

Once the international language of science and learning, Latin has declined in use among priests since the Church began allowing them to hold masses in vernacular languages in the mid 1960s.

To keep the language updated, Vatican produces a dictionary of modern words in the ancient tongue. "Inscriptio cursus electronici" is the vital word "email", while "brevissimae bracae femineae" means hotpants.

With just over 5,000 followers, the pope's Latin-language Twitter account is the smallest of his eight profiles, through which he communicates with more than 2 million followers in languages including Arabic and his native German.

However, Sunday's tweet was not actually the first instance of Latin used by the Pope on Twitter.

Benedict's Twitter handle "Pontifex" is a Latin word literally meaning "bridge-builder", an ancient title for high priest once held by the emperors of Rome.?

NESCA News & Notes: 10 Tips for Special Education Advocates

    From Wrightslaw.com

    By Pat Howey, Advocate
    March 12, 2012

Remember: your goal is to assist parents in achieving an appropriate education for their child.

1.) Good advocates facilitate the IEP process.

Advocates must set an example for the entire IEP Team. They must model behavior for the parents. Challenging school experts, demeaning staff or being inconsiderate or impolite, will not advance the child?s cause.

Your goal is to get better school services for the child. Good advocates ask questions and make valuable suggestions to advocate for a child. It is okay to disagree. It is not okay to put down or verbally attack someone.

2.) Good advocates know the child and understand the disability.

Do your homework before you attempt to advocate for the child. Research the child?s disability. Be ready with ideas about instructional methods that are research-based and peer-reviewed. Meet the child and the family in the home environment. Put off making recommendations until you fully understand how the child?s disability affects his or her life and education.

3.) Good advocates try to reduce existing barriers between the parent and the school.

Your goal is to bring the school and the parent closer to agreement. Good advocates explain to parents that negotiation is part of the IEP Team process ? and a part of life! Pouring gasoline on a fire ensures that everyone gets burned and does not improve the child?s lot.

4.) Good advocates are willing to admit mistakes, and to apologize.

No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. Good advocates are not afraid to say they are sorry when they make a mistake. They may even write a note to everyone involved, apologizing and asking for forgiveness.

5.) Good advocates hone their listening skills to a fine edge.

You must learn to listen to everything that others say. Sometimes, what others do not say is most important. If you are not listening, you may not hear what others say and what they do not say. Good advocates repeat and paraphrase what they have heard to avoid misunderstandings. They ask others to verify that they understood correctly. Good advocates ask follow-up questions. They do not interrupt even when they are faced with rudeness and discourtesy.

6.) Good advocates learn the art of negotiation.

Remember the old saying, ?You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar?? Learning to negotiate is not a sign of weakness or that the parent?s position is not valid. Negotiation is an art that good advocates polish to a fine finish. Successful negotiations allow everyone to come out of the IEP Team Meeting feeling like winners.

Brice Palmer, noted advocate from Vermont, says it best: ?Good advocates learn to develop a language of persuasion rather than a language of positional combat."

7.) Good advocates understand special and general education law and the interrelationship between these and other laws.

The law is not a static entity. It changes every day through court decisions and other types of clarifications. Good advocates review special education law often. They know that answers to frequently asked special education questions may be found in other unrelated laws.

For example, Dept. of Agriculture regulations address special dietary requirements for children. A State?s Dept. of Health regulations may address classroom size, lighting, and window light. General education law may provide insight into class size and case load issues. The U.S. Justice Department provides guidance on bullying and harassment.

Good advocates understand that school policies often omit the special needs of students with disabilities. School emergency plans may not address the needs of children in wheelchairs or children who are deaf or blind. Good advocates learn to research many different laws.

8.) Good advocates know that understanding the law is different from quoting the law.

Good advocates know the law but they understand that it is often ineffective and counterproductive to quote it.

Pete Wright once said, ?[A] parent should never quote law, even if they are an attorney; it simply polarizes relationships. Instead seek 'help' in better understanding something best left to rocket scientists and lawyers." -- Pete Wright, Deltaville, Virginia - Tuesday, March 02, 1999

9.) Good advocates understand the importance of ethical behavior in their practice.

There is no Code of Ethics or Professional Responsibility for special education advocates. Advocates have nothing to look to for guidance and there is no governing body to oversee their practice. There are no penalties for advocates who act unprofessionally or unethically.

This does not suggest that advocates should disregard ethics and engage in irresponsible behavior.

Good advocates understand that the professional respect of the IEP Team is a key to successfully assisting parents achieve an appropriate education for their child.

10.) Good advocates treat others the way they would like to be treated.

No one likes surprises. Members of IEP Teams do not respect or trust advocates who drop bombshells. Taking the team by surprise is likely to backfire, especially if the team ?captain? is a gatekeeper or is determined to be the one who runs the show. Making the IEP Meeting a war of wits does not benefit the child nor does it facilitate the process.

Coke fails to get real about obesity - Food & Nutrition -Obesity -

    ? Food & Nutrition ? ? Obesity ? Jan 20, 2013

Of all the iconic, untouchable brands out there, Coke would surely be the leader. It?s like baseball and Snoopy and your grandma rolled into one.

It?s Coke, for goodness sake, our great munificent giver of sugary elixir!

But the company, once unassailable, has come under attack. New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg?s ban on beverage portions that are bigger than an average toddler - a late-night punch line just a few months ago - is about to take effect. Soda sales are sliding, and more schools are pushing to phase sugary drinks out of the cafeterias.

So you can see why Coke might be feeling a tad defensive. And to that end, the company that for generations has been luring the thirsty with the promise of carefree refreshment is doing something unique: It?s actually addressing obesity.

In a somber - yet hopeful! - new two-minute commercial, Coke reminds us that ?the nation?s leading beverage company? has been part of our lives ?for over 125 years,? boasts that ?we now offer 180 no and low-calorie choices,? and informs us that they now offer reduced-portion sizes for their most popular drinks. As the music swells, Coke asserts its commitment to ?innovative, all natural, no calorie sweeteners? and ends with the cheerful message that we?re all going to work together on this one.

A second new spot aired last week on the season premier of ?American Idol,? in between clips of the judges sitting behind giant cups marked ?Coca Cola.? This, by the way, is from the same people who for years pushed the idea of Coke for breakfast.

We need to get serious about how we eat and drink in this country. We need to address the fact that if half of all Americans over the age of 2 are drinking sugary beverages each day, that?s not good. And that?s a tough road to go down if the nation?s biggest beverage company is looking the other way.

Yet the new campaign reeks of corporate self-interest.

On her Appetite for Profit blog, public health lawyer Michele R. Simon notes, ?This is not about changing the products but about confusing the public. They are downplaying the serious health effects of drinking too much soda and making it sound like balancing soda consumption with exercise is the only issue.?

And in USA Today, Susan Milligan takes issue with ?the disingenuous ad campaign claiming Coke is good for you as long as you go for a jog later in the day.?

Coke is not going to stop being Coke, which is fine because a Coke now and then is pure nectar. But it says a lot about how dumb the company must think we are that it applauds itself for reducing the overall calories in its beverages over the last 15 years while ignoring that obesity rates have simultaneously soared. In his book ?Food Rules,? Michael Pollan points out that ?research suggests that switching to artificial sweeteners does not lead to weight loss.?

So what if, instead of getting all innovative about making new magical sweeteners, the company explored ways to make its drinks less sweet overall? What if it developed new and simpler products instead of new and weirder ones? How much vitamin water do we need, anyway? (Hint: none.)

What if Coke explored bringing us back from our insatiable, high-fructose-fueled lust for overly cloying tastes? Because we?re drowning in diet drinks and getting more obese all the time. Coke would still be a beverage behemoth. But after years of inundating us with fake tastes, it might at last show us what the real thing tastes like.

The same but different ? All About the Benjamin Baby

Once upon a time, in June 2011, before Benjamin?s fungal infection made itself fully apparent, we were under the impression that he would be coming home soon. So with that in mind, my amazing family and friends threw me an awesome baby shower. The weird thing about having a baby shower when you have a preemie is that all of the cute little baby things look? huge. To keep this in proper perspective, in June 2011 Ben weighed less than 5.5lbs and was still wearing preemie clothes. So when I opened up clothes that were larger versions of preemie clothes he owned, I cracked up. I?m pretty sure everyone who was there thought I was either crazy or had had one too many cocktails. Thankfully, when Joe came home from the hospital later that evening and we sorted through our gifts, he found the giant versions of preemie clothes as funny- if not funnier- than I did.

Now, a year and a half and 16 pounds later, Benjamin can just fit into those 18 month versions of his preemie clothes. (Ben weighs over 21lbs right now- holy growth spurt batman!)

DOJ declines to reveal policy memos on GPS tracking

DOJ declines to reveal policies on legality of GPS tracking

The US Supreme Court might have ruled last year that GPS tracking is equivalent to a search, but that doesn't mean the government's practices are transparent. If anything, they may be more opaque than ever. The Department of Justice has responded to an ACLU Freedom of Information Act request for a pair of GPS tracking policy memos by providing almost completely redacted versions that, effectively, say nothing. Not surprisingly, the ACLU isn't satisfied -- it's worried that the government is playing fast and loose with definitions of where GPS tracking is usable, and when it requires a warrant under the Fourth Amendment. Whether or not the allegations are true, the civil liberty advocates are going through the courts to push for more access; we may know the truth before too long.

Hostage's kin: Military likely killed many Westerners

A number of hostages have reportedly managed to escape from the natural gas facility in Algeria where hostages from 10 countries have now been held for three days, while some were killed and injured during a raid by the Algerian military and still more remain unaccounted for. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News

Many of the Western hostages held by Islamist militants at a gas plant in Algeria were likely inadvertently killed by the country's military, relatives of an Irishman who survived claimed, as the standoff continued Friday.

A day after the attempted rescue operation at the In Amenas gas facility, joint-operator BP said in a statement Friday that the "serious situation" at the plant was ongoing and that the "current location and situation" of a small number of its employees was still uncertain.

Algerian news agency APS reported Friday that a total of 650 hostages, including 573 Algerians, had been freed, citing a security source. The report, which was relayed by Reuters, said there were a total of 132 foreign hostages, suggesting 55 were unaccounted for. These figures could not be verified by NBC News.

Mauritanian news agency ANI also reported that a spokesman for the Islamist group had offered to swap American hostages -- three U.S. citizens are thought to have been captured -- for two militants jailed in the United States. Again, this claim could not be verified by NBC News.

    McFaul family via Reuters

Belfast native Stephen McFaul (right) is pictured with his sons Dylan (left) and Jake in this family handout photo taken four years ago and made available Thursday.

Stephen McFaul was among the hostages who escaped alive, but his brother Brian said many others appeared to have been killed during an attempted rescue operation by Algerian authorities.

Brian McFaul told Reuters that the Westerners were being moved Thursday in five vehicles with explosives hanging round their necks when the army attacked and destroyed four of the trucks. McFaul?s vehicle crashed and he was able to make ?a break for his freedom,? his brother told the wire service.

A Western diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, warned early Friday that ?there still could be hostages.?

And a spokeswoman for the British Foreign Office also said Friday that ?as far as we are aware the terrorist situation is ongoing,? as Algerian officials had not said that it was over.

A local source told Reuters that 30 hostages, including Westerners, and 11 of their captors were killed by the Algerian military action Thursday. The source added that the gas base was still surrounded by Algerian special forces and some hostages remained inside. These claims could not be verified by NBC News.

Among those unaccounted for were Americans, Britons, French, Norwegians, Romanians, Malaysians, Japanese and Algerians.

The US offered to provide Algerians with special operations forces, hostage rescue and counter-terrorism teams but the Algerians wanted to handle the hostage situation themselves. Obama administration officials say the Algerians did not inform the US in advance of the attack. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

Three flights left Algeria yesterday taking 11 BP employees and several hundred employees from other companies to the U.K. and Spain, the British oil giant said. Not all of these people were from In Amenas.

Reuters also cited a local source as saying a U.S. plane had landed at In Amenas airport to evacuate Americans from the area.

An Obama administration official, speaking on background, said the U.S. was not aware of the Algerian raid in advance.

Before the operation, the U.S. had urged the Algerians to be cautious and encouraged them to make the safety of the hostages their top priority.

But the account given to Reuters by Brian McFaul cast doubt on the Algerians' methods:

"[The militants] were moving five Jeep-loads of hostages from one part of the compound. At that stage they were intercepted by the Algerian army. The army bombed four out of five of the trucks and four of them were destroyed," he said.

"The truck my brother was in crashed and at that stage Stephen was able to make a break for his freedom," he added. "He presumed everyone else in the other trucks was killed."

Brian McFaul said he did not speak to his brother directly, but got an account from Stephen's wife Angela after she spoke to him. The hostages had their mouths taped and explosives hung from around their necks, McFaul added.

However, in messages posted on Twitter Friday, U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague said that ?primary responsibility for tragic events in #Algeria rests with terrorists who murdered some & held others hostage.?

?We are working to ensure that those who survived ordeal in #Algeria are properly cared for & reunited with their loved ones,? he said, in a message posted on the British Foreign Office?s Twitter account.

?We shall maintain our resolve to see al-Qaida denied a foothold on Europe's southern border,? he added. ?This terrible incident has highlighted again the threat in North Africa & Sahel from international terrorism.?

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Making An Investment In 401k Gold | Liberty

A gold retirement program is undoubtedly a good way to retire so you definitely need to make it part of your investing now so it can pay off returns after retirement age comes. Thus don?t be reluctant to make investments in this particular precious metal these days.

It?s important to truly begin thinking about retirement gold options because the American dollar is a fiat currency and as we know these kinds of fiat currencies do not survive forever. Every one of them has gone down throughout history, and it wouldn?t surprise me whatsoever if the American dollar follows suit eventually as the historical past lets us know that that?s what is going to happen.

So I really hope you?re starting to see just how important a retirement gold investment will be, and I do not just mean owning gold as part of your stock portfolio. It?s far more risky to make an investment in this commodity, thus I usually only advise to individuals that they buy the physical gold itself. In case you are aware of the stock exchange then maybe it is best to do it now, but if you do not, then simply purchase gold bullion.

Thus you definitely need to set aside some gold retirement accounts for you to shield yourself from any potential issues that could occur in the hard economic climate and the US money being in this difficulty. The choice is yours, but do not claim I did not warn you.

Retirement investing is imperative to have a safe future. The best way is to invest in a gold backed IRA. If you want to know more, check out Gold IRA

(AP) ? Maria Sharapova leaned back and pumped her arms. She ripped her elbows back and forth, screaming after her victory. Four pumps, five ? she rocked forward ? six pumps. More.

Sharapova had just defeated Venus Williams 6-1, 6-3 Friday, her first victory over the seven-time major winner in a Grand Slam. This was a match clearly worth celebrating, but it was if Sharapova had won the Australian Open title eight days early.

"I was just really pumped," she said. "Why shouldn't I be?"

After back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 wins in the first two rounds ? the first time that happened at major since 1985 ? Sharapova has conceded the fewest number of games en route to the fourth round at the Australian Open since Steffi Graf did so 24 years ago. Graf also lost only four games in her first three matches on her way to the second of her three consecutive titles in Melbourne.

Sharapova knows she must stay on top of her game. Another Williams could be waiting. Since Sharapova won the French Open, to complete a career Grand Slam of all four major titles, Serena Williams has won just about everything.

Asked if she was thinking about a showdown with the younger of the Williams sisters, Sharapova said: "She's on the other side of the draw, and other players are on the other side of the draw as well."

That means they can meet only in the final.

"Until you get to that stage, and if you do, if you're facing each other," she said, "that's the point when you're thinking about that particular opponent."

The top two contenders on the opposite side of the draw, defending champion Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams, play one after the other at Rod Laver Arena on Saturday. Top-ranked Azarenka is first up against American Jamie Hampton, followed by Williams against Ayumi Morita of Japan.

U.S. Open champion Andy Murray follows them in a third-round match against occasional hitting partner Ricardas Berankis, a qualifier from Lithuania. Four-time Australian Open champion Roger Federer has the night match against Bernard Tomic, the last Aussie in the men's or women's draws.

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic took another step closer to a third consecutive Australian title, defeating Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 in the third round.

His victory came on the same day Lance Armstrong admitted during a television interview with Oprah Winfrey that he used banned drugs to win his seven Tour de France titles. Djokovic, a lifetime cycling fan, said at his post-match news conference that it was "a disgrace for the sport to have an athlete like this."

"He cheated the sport," Djokovic said. "He cheated many people around the world with his career, with his life story."

Djokovic did not have an easy time against the 31st-seeded Stepanek and was troubled at times by the Czech's serve-and-volley game. But Djokovic came out laughing, and he embraced his opponent over the net at the end. Stepanek even had chair umpire Carlos Bernardes grinning after producing an unexpected, over-the-shoulder winner to save one match point in the last game.

"Absolutely, it was great. Great match and great fun," Djokovic said. "It's always tricky to play Radek. He's a talented player. Skillful player."

Stepanek won 36 of the 67 points he played at the net, forcing Djokovic out of his comfort zone at the back of the court and making him work for every point.

"He's skillful on the net and he was not giving me a lot of rhythm ? he was changing up the pace on the ball," Djokovic said. "Nowadays everything is based on the baseline. It's nice to see somebody coming to the net."

Djokovic will play Sunday against No. 15 Stanislas Wawrinka, who knocked out the last American man in the draw with a 7-6 (6), 7-5, 6-4 win over No. 20 Sam Querrey. For the second straight year, there will be no American men in the fourth round at Melbourne Park.

In the last match of the day, fourth-seeded David Ferrer finished off a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 win over 2006 Australian finalist Marcos Baghdatis with an ace, advancing to a fourth-round match against Japan's Kei Nishikori.

No. 5 Tomas Berdych beat Austria's Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 and will next play South Africa's Kevin Anderson, who beat No. 22 Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Djokovic's Serbian Davis Cup teammate Janko Tipsarevic advanced to a meeting with No. 10 Nicolas Almagro.

In an all-Serbian match of two former No. 1 women, 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic beat Jelena Jankovic 7-5, 6-3. She moved into the fourth round against Poland's Angieszka Radwanska, who is seeded No. 4 and won her 12th straight match ? including titles at Auckland and Sydney ? with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Britain's Heather Watson.

No. 5 Angelique Kerber and No. 19 Ekaterina Makarova, two of the four women who beat Serena Williams in 2012, will meet in the fourth round. Kerber stopped 17-year-old American Madison Keys 6-2, 7-5 in the opening match at Rod Laver Arena, then blew out the candles on a cake to celebrate her 25th birthday. The crowd sang "Happy Birthday."

Makarova, who beat Williams in the fourth round in Australia last year, had a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 win over 2007 Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli.

No. 6 Li Na, the 2011 French Open winner, eliminated No. 27 Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-4, 6-1 and will next play No. 18 Julia Goerges. Goerges prevented an all-China fourth-round encounter by beating Zheng Jie 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium beat Valeria Savinykh 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and is up against Sharapova next.

All along, Sharapova had been preparing for this third-round match. She withdrew from an exhibition tournament and the Brisbane International with a sore collarbone, but hasn't showed any signs of being troubled by it Melbourne.

"I think when we both looked at the draw, it was a matchup we were both looking forward to," Sharapova said. "I was just really determined out there because I knew the tennis that she's capable of producing and playing. She's a tremendous athlete and a great champion."

Sharapova's exuberant celebrations had little effect on Venus Williams. She barely acknowledged it as she made her way from the court.

"Definitely not my best today, but there's always other days to play better," she said. "I just had a lot of errors. ... That never helps."
