Brother MFC-J280w

As a budget MFP geared to a home office or micro office, the Brother MFC-J280w ($100 street) is a mixed bag, having some strong business features while lacking some sensible, complementary ones. Like the Editors? Choice Brother MFC-J430w ($100 street, 4 stars), it?s decidedly business-oriented rather than home?unusual for an MFP at its price point. It has some nice touches, like good speed and a low claimed cost per page, but the MFC-J430W presents a better rounded and more compelling package.

The MFC-J280w can print, copy, scan, and fax. It lets you fax either from your computer (PC Fax), or standalone faxing without needing a computer. However, it lacks an automatic document feeder (ADF) for unattended copying, scanning, or faxing of multi-page documents. It also lacks a port for a USB thumb drive as well as a media-card reader. The MFP is compatible with the Brother iPrint&Scan app, which allows you to print or scan from an Apple, Android, or Windows 7 Phone mobile device on the same wireless network.

The matte-black MFC-J280w is reasonably compact, measuring 6.3 by 15.9 by 14.9 inches (HWD) and weighing 19.2 pounds. It has a 1.9-inch color touch screen with touch panel controls for navigating menus. It has a 100-sheet paper tray, a bit meager for home-office use, and lacks an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper.

The MFC-J280w connects to a PC via a USB cable, or to a network via WiFi (802.11b/g), but lacks Ethernet connectivity. I tested it over a USB connection with the drivers installed on a computer running Windows Vista.

Brother MFC-J280w

Print Speed

The Brother MFC-J280w printed out the latest version of our business applications suite (as timed with QualityLogic?s hardware and software) at a zippy 4.3 effective pages per minute (ppm), matching the speed turned in by the MFC-J430w. It proved faster than the Editors? Choice Kodak ESP C310 All-in-One Printer ($99.99 direct, 4 stars), which chugged through the tests at a 2.7 ppm clip.

In contrast to its business printing speed, the MFC-J280w turned in a lackadaisical 1 minute 57 second average in printing out 4-by-6 photos, effectively tying the MFC-J430w (1:59). The Kodak ESP C310, which is a more home- than business-friendly MFP, turned the tables in photo printing with an impressively low average of 46 seconds per 4-by-6 print.

Output Quality

The MFC-J280w?s output quality was a touch below par across the board. Text quality was suitable for schoolwork or general business use, but not up to use with documents like resumes in which visual impact is important, or documents with smaller fonts.

As for graphics, illustrations generally looked slightly pale or faded. Some dithering (solid areas appearing grainy) was apparent, and several graphics showed minor banding (a regular pattern of faint stripes lighter than the background). The graphics were suitable for displaying data in reports or PowerPoint handouts, though I?d hesitate in giving them to, say, a client I was seeking to impress through their visual appearance.

In some photo prints there was considerable loss of detail in brighter areas. Still, most of the prints could pass for drugstore quality. Printing photos proved tricky, as the printer frequently failed to recognize Brother?s letter-sized photo paper (even with the driver set for it) and I?d have to reload it, sometimes several times.

Other Issues

Brother?s claimed running cost is 3.8 cents per monochrome page and 10.7 cents per color page, a low figure for a printer at its price. The color figure is even lower than that of the MFC-J430w (11.3 cents).

The Brother MFC-J280w is a rarity, a budget inkjet MFP with home-office chops but few home (namely, photo-centric) features. It has very good speed, a low claimed cost per page, and some nice flourishes like the ability to work as a standalone fax machine as well as to initiate faxes from your PC. Still, it lacks some of the features of the similar, Editors? Choice Brother MFC-J430w?such as an automatic document feeder, which lets you fax, copy, or scan multi-page documents without having to feed each sheet in by hand. If you?re looking for a more home-oriented budget inkjet MFP, be sure to check out the Kodak ESP C310.

eFax (for Android)

One would think that e-mail, FTP, instant messaging, and other methods of transferring files would have killed the fax machine, but the antiquated tool is still alive and kicking, especially in the business sector. Fortunately, you no longer need a dedicated fax machine (and the associated phone line and ink) to send and receive paperwork. eFax (Various prices 4 stars), an Internet-based fax service available in over 3,500 cities and 46 countries worldwide, gives you a real fax number that you can use to send and receive faxes?using your smartphone. The electronic faxing service's new Android app keeps most of the desktop version's functionality by letting the business-minded send messages from their Google-powered smartphones. ?You may not be able to apply digital signatures as you can with the desktop version, but it's a competent and capable business-friendly mobile app.

Simple Setup
eFax' Android app has a simple set up process for those who are new to the service. You simply input your name, email address, area code, phone number, check the Customer Agreement box, and tap Start Faxing. I inputted it into the app so that I could log in after receiving the fax number and pin in an email. I then arrived at the home screen that featured four main sections: "View Inbox," "View Folders," "Search Faxes," and "Send A Fax." Each section's function is self-explanatory. Naturally, existing eFax users can simply log in with their credentials.

Cost
There are three different types of eFax accounts: Free, Plus, and Pro. The free account lets you receive (not send) just 10 faxes per month, so it's a good match for those who very rarely fax. Next up the ladder is eFax Plus ($16.95 per month), which includes 150 pages of incoming and outbound faxes, and a 10-cent per page coverage fee (there's also a $10 one-time set up charge). eFax also offers a Pro model ($19.95 per month, $220 per year) designed for large businesses and individuals with heavy faxing needs. There's a $19.95 one-time set up fee, but with the higher cost comes 200 pages of incoming faxes and a cool voicemail feature that sends left messages to your inbox. There's also a 10-cent per page overage charge, which is five cents cheaper than the basic plan.

The Plus and Pro accounts are relatively expensive compared to Send2Fax' Home Office and Small Business plans which are $8.95 per month and $12.95 per month, respectively. MyFax has three plans, one of which starts of $10 per month for 100 faxes sent and 200 received.

The eFax Experience
Firing off a fax required that I tap "Send A Fax," key a phone number into the address field, and optionally fill in cover letter information. At the moment, eFax for Android only allows you to send photos snapped with the phone's camera or stored within the image gallery?no other file types. So, if you want to send a document, you'd have to shoot it with your phone's camera and then send it (which is what I did to test the service). You can, however, use eFax' email-to-fax capabilities (outside of the mobile app) to send files of any type.

The recipient contacted me stating that he received the fax five minutes after it was sent. When he responded with a fax of his own, it arrived in my inbox seven minutes later?not bad considering the money I saved on a dedicated machine, ink, and paper. Faxes can be tagged and archived, or forwarded as faxes or email messages, but you can?t add digital signatures as you can with the desktop version. Note: Fax quality may vary depending on your phone's camera.

Should You Subscribe to eFax?
eFax for Android works because it makes the fax process simple?you don't need to own a machine or visit Kinkos. All that's needed is a Web connection, which means you can fax from nearly any location. eFax for Android may only let you fax photos , and it doesn't support digital signatures, but there's an extremely high convenience factor. All in all, eFax is a solid companion for the for business customers who want to save on paper and ink.

Turkey, Azerbaijan sign pipeline deal (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Turkey and Azerbaijan on Monday signed an agreement to establish a consortium that would build a pipeline to transport 16 billion cubic meters (565 billion cubic feet) per year of Azeri gas to Turkey and Europe.

The two countries' energy ministers signed a memorandum of understanding for a consortium between Azerbaijan's state energy company SOCAR, Turkey's state-run pipeline company BOTAS, and the Turkish petroleum company TPAO. The deal allows other oil and gas companies to join the consortium.

The projected pipeline, the Trans Anadolu, would carry gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz II field, across Turkey.

The deal comes at a time when officials are dithering over plans for the construction of the European Union-backed Nabucco pipeline project aimed at reducing the bloc's deliveries from Russia. The project is slated to ship gas from the Caspian region through southern Europe to Austria, but its viability has been called into question amid doubts that enough suppliers can be found to fill the pipeline.

Turkey's Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said the Trans Anadolu could eventually be connected to Nabucco.

Azerbaijan's Industry and Energy Minister Natiq Aliev said the Trans Anadolu pipeline would initially carry 16 billion cubic meters (565 billion cubic feet) per year of gas but the capacity could, in time, increase to 24 billion cubic meters (847 billion cubic feet) per year.

Six billion cubic meters (212 billion cubic feet) of the gas would be sold to Turkey while some 10 billion cubic meters (353 billion cubic feet) would go to European markets, Aliev said.

SOCAR has an 80 percent stake in the Trans Anadolu consortium, while the Turkish companies share 20 percent, Yildiz said.

Officials said construction is scheduled to begin in 2012 and end in 2017.

The pipeline's route and cost would be announced after a feasibility study by SOCAR, Yildiz told reporters.

JXD S7100 Android Gaming Tablet/Handset Boasts Galaxy S II Specs For $140

We?ve seen quite a few Android gaming handsets make their way out of China and while the JXD S7100 doesn?t look much different, it?s what this handset has on the inside that really caught our eye. Boasting specs more along the lines of a Galaxy S II device, the JXD offers almost the same processor with a dual-core Cortex A-9 processor and Mali 400 graphics core powering the device. This makes the JXD more than capable of most graphics intensive Android titles as long as they don?t require anything over Android 2.2, which the device comes shipped with. Also found inside the device is 512MB of RAM, 2MP rear/.3MP front facing cameras, 16GB of internal storage and HDMI out. A huge 7-inch touchscreen display can be found on front with a resolution of 800?480.

The JXD S7100 laughably advertises ?Apple games? and most will find greater use with the available emulator apps for Android than its own custom app center. I?d say the most appeal is in its $140 price-tag making this an almost instant buy should you come across this at your local swap meet. If you want to see the JXD in action, check out the video below ? oh, and you?re going to want to turn your speakers up.

Oil below $99 amid signs US crude demand improving

(AP) ? Oil prices hovered below $99 a barrel Thursday in Asia as signs of improving U.S. crude demand were offset by ongoing concerns about Europe's debt crisis.

Benchmark crude for February delivery was up 10 cents to $98.77 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.43 to settle at $98.67 on Wednesday.

In London, Brent crude was up 3 cents at $107.74 on the ICE futures exchange.

Oil jumped Wednesday amid evidence U.S. crude demand could be growing. The Energy Information Administration said Wednesday that crude inventories fell last week by 10.6 million barrels, the biggest drop ever for that time period and a much larger drop that the decrease of 2.3 million barrels forecast in an analyst survey by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill.

Crude has zigzagged near $100 for the last five weeks, with prices capped by investor fears that austerity measures to lower debt levels could trigger a recession in Europe next year.

Traders are also eyeing potential disruptions to global crude supplies. Tensions between Western nations and Iran, the world's fourth biggest crude producer, have been rising over Iran's nuclear ambitions. Political instability in Kazakhstan, which exports about 1.3 million barrels of oil per day or about 1.5 percent of world demand, could also threaten its supplies.

Trading volume normally falls during the next two weeks as many traders take vacations around the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays.

In other energy trading on the Nymex, natural gas rose 0.5 cent to $3.16 per 1,000 cubic feet. Heating oil fell 0.4 cent to $2.91 a gallon and gasoline futures were up 0.4 cent to $2.63 a gallon.

England coaches Ford and Wells leave RFU

England Rugby World Cup assistant coaches Mike Ford and John Wells have left the Rugby Football Union (RFU) with immediate effect.

John Wells and Mike Ford were England's forwards and defence coaches respectively for the 2007 and 2011 Rugby World Cups.

The RFU have named Saxons coach Stuart Lancaster as caretaker coach for the Six Nations which starts in February and Ford and Wells will play no part in the upcoming championship.

Lancaster will be assisted by scrum coach Graham Rowntree and former Test centre Andy Farrell.

Acting RFU Chief Executive Stephen Brown said: "John and Mike have given great service to England and rugby in this country over many years and their contribution is appreciated.

"As well as his role with the senior team, John has played a major part in developing players as a National Academy coach since he joined the RFU in 2005. In his five-and-a-half years with the senior team Mike created one of the best defences in world rugby, and while the World Cup was obviously disappointing overall, it should be noted that England conceded just three tries in their five matches ? the joint lowest in the tournament.

"On behalf of the RFU I would like to wish them well in the next stages of their careers."

John Wells said: "It has been a real privilege and a great honour to have been involved with the RFU for the last six years. I have been part of a very successful National Academy and England Saxons set up and been to two World Cups including a World Cup final in 2007, with the victories over Australia in Marseille and France in Paris as stunning highlights with the England team.

"Now is the right time to move on to look for a new challenge within the game. I am proud to be leaving at the end of a year in which England has introduced a wealth of young talent, won 10 out of 13 games and are the current Six Nations champions.

"I consider myself very fortunate to have worked with some great coaches and I would like to thank Robbo, Brian Ashton and Johno for the opportunity and Brian Smith, Mike Ford and Wig (Graham Rowntree) for putting up with my "old school' ideals!"

"I wish Stuart (Lancaster), Wig, Faz (Andy Farrell) and the rest of the England crew all the very best in the defence of their Six Nations title."

Mike Ford said: "To be England's defence coach over the last five-and-a-half years has been an absolute honour and I have worked with some great players and management. "

"The World Cup was a watershed and it is time for a new environment. I wish Stuart and everyone the very best for the Six Nations and I firmly believe that England can win it."

Jobless claims drop signals economic momentum (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits hit a 3-1/2 year low last week, bolstering views the economy was gaining momentum, even though third-quarter growth was revised down.

Other data on Thursday underscored the firming tone in the economy, with consumer sentiment scaling a six-month high in December and a barometer of future activity rising for a seventh straight month in November.

While the economy is wrapping up 2011 with a spring in its step, bickering over budget policy in Washington and the debt crisis in Europe have cast a cloud over its prospects next year.

A payroll tax cut and benefits for the long-term unemployed, both of which are due to expire at year end, have become tangled in partisan politics and it is unclear whether they will be renewed.

There were signs on Thursday the impasse had been broken, with House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner informing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid he will set a vote on a Senate-passed two-month extension of the payroll tax cut, according to a Democratic leadership aide.

"The economy is carrying some clear momentum into 2012," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pennsylvania. "If Congress doesn't kill that by failing to extend the tax breaks, we can look forward to a better year ahead."

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 4,000 to 364,000, the Labor Department said. That was the lowest level since April 2008 and just a month after the collapse of Bear Stearns.

The claims data, which covered the survey period for the December nonfarm payrolls report, helped to take the sting out of a separate report showing the economy expanded at only a 1.8 percent annual rate in the third quarter.

Growth, which had previously been reported to have expanded at a 2 percent pace, was held back by a sharp drop in healthcare spending, the Commerce Department said. A month ago, it had said healthcare spending had risen.

The revision to healthcare spending estimates reflected new source data, which showed losses at nonprofit hospitals.

However, spending on long-lasting goods was stronger than previously estimated, indicating consumer demand remained healthy.

Prospects for spending were boosted by the rise in consumer confidence. The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's sentiment index rose to 69.9 from 64.1 in November as measures of both current conditions and future expectations increased.

LABOR MARKET IMPROVING

The data helped stocks on Wall Street to post their third straight day of gains. The U.S. government bond market largely ignored the data, while the dollar was flat against a basket of currencies.

Even as much of the rest of the world is slowing down, with a mild recession forecast for Europe next year, the U.S. economy remains resilient.

The labor market is improving, households are spending, home building is picking up and factory output is expanding, putting the economy on course for at least a 3 percent growth pace in the fourth quarter. That would be the fastest pace in 18 months.

An index from the private sector Conference Board that seeks to predict the strength of future economic activity rose for a seven straight month in November, suggesting the economy could pick up even more speed by spring.

While claims for first-time unemployment benefits tend to be volatile this time of the year, they have dropped for three straight weeks. A four-week moving average, a better measure of trends, is now at its lowest level since June 2008.

"One unexpectedly low number can easily be a fluke; two are interesting; three are telling us something real is happening in the labor market," said Ian Shepherdson, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics in Valhalla, New York.

"The drop in claims in recent weeks, if sustained, is consistent with private payrolls growth ramping up to about 200,000 per month."

Nonfarm employment growth has grown by an average of 131,636 jobs per month so far this year, but not enough to significantly lower the jobless rate which is currently at 8.6 percent.

GROWTH GAINING STEAM

Last quarter's growth was still a step up from the April-June period's 1.3 percent pace. Part of the pick-up in output reflected a reversal of factors that held back growth earlier in the year.

The drop in healthcare consumption caused consumer spending growth to fall to a 1.7 percent rate from 2.3 percent. Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of economic activity.

Business inventories fell, but not as sharply as previously reported. Restocking by businesses is expected to support growth in the fourth quarter, helping to keep factories busy.

In addition, businesses showed little signs of cutting back on spending and profits continued to grow at a healthy clip.

Excluding inventories, the economy grew at a 3.2 percent rate, revised down from a 3.6 percent pace.

Aaron Belkin: Notes from the White House

I was honored to attend policy briefings and a reception at the White House this week along with hundreds of activists and community leaders from around the country. It was a fascinating opportunity to take the temperature of the progressive base, in that participants represented a wide range of organizations working on everything from health care to immigration to the environment.

The media has reported widely about the left's dissatisfaction with the Obama administration. But if the enthusiasm I saw at the White House is at all reflective of broader trends, then the base is much more optimistic about the administration and the campaign than has been reported.

From what I could tell from the tone and content of question-and-answer sessions as well as one-on-one conversations that I had after the briefings, there was a near-consensus that the President has solved some of the nation's most critical problems:

(1) Preventing the economy from falling off a cliff. The economy was shrinking at an astounding annual rate of 7% when Obama took office. His policies brought us back from the brink;

(2) Providing health care for all. Obama got a pretty good bill through Congress, a bill that has extended coverage to more than 2 million kids. The bill has already saved lives and it will save many more;

(3) Ending the war in Iraq. It is difficult to end a war, even an unpopular one, but most of our troops are now home;

(4) Re-regulating the financial system. Dodd-Frank isn't Glass-Steagall, but it establishes important protections and enhances stability and transparency.

Stamping out unemployment is a top-priority area, of course, where the activists and community leaders agreed that the President has not yet had reached his goals. But everyone recognized that Republicans fought tooth and nail to block additional stimulus, and that the President's policies nonetheless yielded 20+ months in a row of private sector job growth.

And at the same time that he was ending a war and staving off economic collapse, the activists and community leaders were impressed that the President found Osama bin Laden, rescued the auto industry, got the START treaty through Congress, ended "don't ask, don't tell," and appointed wise and thoughtful justices to the Supreme Court.

Everyone I spoke with recognizes that there is a lot of work left to be done, especially in the areas of climate change, labor policy, tax fairness and immigration. And, everyone wishes that health care and financial re-regulation bills were more expansive.

But folks agreed that by any reasonable standard, this administration's accomplishments have
been historic. Their enthusiasm isn't just a reflection of distaste for the Republicans, but
represents a genuine and, I believe, accurate sense that President Obama is an outstanding public servant.

The election is almost a year away, but the President's foot soldiers are ready to go.

James Murdoch looks lonelier after week of probes (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? The methodical dissection in courtrooms across London this week of events at Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World tabloid has finally destroyed the company's long-held defense about phone-hacking and left son James more isolated than ever.

The 39-year-old, until recently seen as the Murdoch child most likely to replace Rupert at the top of News Corp (NSWA.O), has until now hung on to his job by blaming those around him for the hacking scandal that has caused public outrage.

Criticism of James Murdoch initially focused on his poor handling of the affair but accusations by two of his former top lieutenants that he misled parliament in July turned the spotlight on his own involvement in a possible cover-up.

"It really became personal with the challenge by Crone and Myler," said a person close to Murdoch, referring to the News of the World's ex-legal chief and last editor who appeared at an inquiry this week.

The public opposition between Colin Myler and James Murdoch -- Myler was previously at the New York Post and was close to James's rather Rupert -- can only have increased tensions within the global media group and the family.

The drama had appeared to subside from a peak in July, when News Corp took the shocking damage-limitation decision to shut down the News of the World, and both Murdochs were dragged into Britain's parliament to answer questions about phone-hacking.

But the longer-lasting damage to Murdoch's reputation appears to have developed in the following months.

A government-ordered inquiry sits most days at London's High Court, poring over every detail of the culture, practices and ethics of the News of the World and its rivals.

In separate courtrooms around the city, the private investigator central to the hacking is suing the newspaper after it stopped paying his legal fees, some senior executives have launched legal claims and others are suing for unfair dismissal.

The result has been a drip feed of information that has kept the story on front pages and the pressure on Murdoch.

"We are now past the tipping point," said crisis PR expert Richard Levick, who has advised organizations in trouble including the Catholic church and Arab governments. "We can see the future, and for James Murdoch it's not good."

NIGHTMARE SCENARIO

Ex-legal chief Tom Crone and former editor Myler resurfaced this week at a judge-led inquiry ordered by Britain's prime minister at the height of the scandal, and, more dangerously, also turned up in a 2008 email chain sent to by Myler to James Murdoch and now made public, which he claims he did not read.

The emails talk about a "nightmare scenario" in relation to an attempt to settle with a hacking victim who planned to demonstrate that the practice was rife at the newspaper, not limited to a "rogue reporter" as the company had claimed.

The correspondence, discovered by lawyers hired by News Corp for an internal investigation, provides the strongest evidence yet that Murdoch may have known there was evidence of more widespread hacking, and back up Crone and Myler's word against his.

Murdoch said in response to the unearthing of the email this week that he probably received it on his BlackBerry mobile phone and did not scroll down to read the chain below, despite the fact that the top of the email says "it is as bad as we feared".

His so-called "BlackBerry defense" has been widely derided by critics.

"If he's telling the truth that he didn't read it then he is negligent and if he did read it then he's lying," said Roy Greenslade, a London professor of journalism who has worked for Rupert Murdoch and was editor of the Daily Mirror.

"It is hugely significant and I think a watershed moment for him," said Greenslade. "I believe his position is untenable."

Inside the company, a few supporters still believe it could be possible for James Murdoch to succeed his father as chief executive one day, but it will not be soon, and for the time being he will keep a relatively low profile internally.

Murdoch's move to the United States to work as deputy chief operating officer to Chase Carey has been delayed by the investigations in Britain, but he is spending more and more time in New York and planning to move there from London next year.

"The process seems to have taken a toll on him emotionally, but he is holding up better than one would expect under the circumstances... he is still taking meetings and making business plans for the new year," said one News Corp insider.

After being stationed at one of the U.S's few remaining bases in Iraq at Camp Adder, these soldiers today prepared to board their flight home to the United States from Kuwait. Most of them had been in Iraq for the past 7 to 10 months. Getty photographer Joe Raedle spent the past few weeks embedded with the troops. One of their first stops after leaving Iraq was McDonald's, after several weeks eating only MRE's (Meal, Ready to Eat).

The U.S. military's pullout of Iraq was formally recognized today with a flag ceremony in Baghdad. While 4,000 troops remain in the country, they will completely out by the end of the year.

For the complete story: 'A new chapter': US officially ends Iraq war.

Schwarzenegger: Solyndra debate 'narrow minded' (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? In a rare public appearance since leaving office, former Republican California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called the debate over bankrupt solar panel maker Solyndra narrow-minded in a world moving ever-faster toward renewable energy.

Schwarzenegger said Thursday he took time out from a movie shoot to address Gov. Jerry Brown's climate conference at the California Academy of Sciences.

While in office, the former governor frequently promoted California's landmark 2006 global warming law, called AB32, which paved the way for the state's cap-and-trade system for controlling greenhouse gas emissions by the worst polluters.

Schwarzenegger said the Fremont, Calif.-based solar panel maker that went under despite a half-billion dollar government loan did the best it could but made business mistakes that led to its demise.
